Development XI lose out to Wales in rain-affected clash

Staffordshire County Cricket Club all-rounder Jack Redman.

Staffordshire Development XI were beaten by Wales in a rain-affected encounter at Stone SP.

Wales won the toss and elected to bat, with the weather reducing their innings from 50 overs to 46.

And in between the breaks in play they made excellent progress to close on 242-6.

Mathew Ryan made 28 up front for Wales, but it was Harrison Jones who orchestrated Wales’ innings.

He hit nine fours and three sixes in his 87 to top score, while Nathanael Scott chipped in with 41 and William Ryan made 38.

Spinner Jack Redman was the pick of the Staffordshire attack as he finished with 4-46.

The rain once again arrived to disrupt Staffs’ run chase – and their target was eventually revised to 217 from 39 overs.

They hit early trouble, though, after being reduced to 60-5, despite Redman making 17.

It was always going to be an uphill battle from that point, but Niall McHale looked to spark a revival with a half-century.

McHale compiled 57, which featured eight fours, to give Staffordshire some hope.

Jack Batchelor (29), Joe Wright (24) and Ed Batchelor (23no) also made handy contributions, but the task ultimately proved to be beyond Staffordshire.

They closed on 191-8 as Jones followed up his excellent batting performance with 3-35 and there were two wickets apiece for Jason Foulkes and Dan Evans.
