Former Staffordshire players were in attendance to watch the current crop of county players in action on day one of the NCCA Championship game against Buckinghamshire.

Staffs invited all ex-players to attend a reunion event at Stafford’s Riverway ground on Sunday afternoon.

A healthy turn out of players accepted the invitation to not only watch the Division One East game, but also to catch up with old friends and reminisce about their days playing for the county.

The day proved to be a huge success and future events will be staged in the coming seasons.

‘Top day’

Staffordshire cricket committee chairman Richard Harvey said: “First and foremost Stafford is a great venue for three-day cricket. It was great to see a large crowd there watching some tough cricket.

“To catch up with old mates that I haven’t seen for a few years, and also seeing former Staffs players come together from different eras was brilliant.

“And getting the opportunity to watch the current team together was great.  The idea is to reunite old Staffs players and connect the past with the present. And if we get to reminisce a bit then that’s what’s it all about!

“In the week leading up to the event I received a lot of messages of support from players who were unable to attend on this occasion but are keen to attend future events.

“I’m definitely looking forward to making this an annual activity in the Staffordshire calendar that we can grow year on year.”

Among those in attendance were legendary batsman David Hancock, who is second on the county’s all-time run-scoring list and Nick Archer – Staffs’ most successful captain after leading the side to three Championship titles and two one-day crowns in the 1990s.
