Staffordshire’s hopes of NCCA Twenty20 Cup glory came to a disappointing end as they were well beaten by Bedfordshire in their semi-final encounter.
Staffs made the trip to the picturesque Wormsley ground with aspirations of adding this year’s title to the T20 Cup crown they picked up in 2023.
However, they suffered a six-wicket defeat in the opening clash of the day to leave them heading back up the motorway earlier than anticipated.
The toss was always going to be crucial to the match, given it was a 10am start and there had been plenty of rain around in recent days.
And the coin flip fell the way of Bedfordshire’s Jake Tarling, who had no hesitation in opting to bowl first.
It was a decision which was fully justified as James Anson’s 5-13 instigated Staffordshire’s downfall to 131 all out.
Joe Hawkins top-scored with 41, but it always seemed likely that Staffs were light on the runs front.
And so it proved as half-centuries from Jamie Dunk (70no) and Nabil Moughal (57) eased Bedfordshire to their target with eight balls remaining.
‘Key over’
Staffordshire actually started positively enough as openers Nils Priestley and Reeve Evitts put on 28 for the first wicket in three overs.
But it was the fourth over of the innings which swung the momentum Bedfordshire’s way as Priestley, Dan Lincoln and captain James Kettleborough were all dismissed by seamer Anson.
Priestley was the first to fall for nine, before Lincoln and Kettleborough departed for third and first-ball ducks respectively.
And when Anson claimed a fourth wickets, accounting for Evitts (24), Staffordshire were in deep trouble on 42-4.
It was up to Ollie Walker and Hawkins to launch a rebuilding mission as the innings headed towards the halfway stage.
They managed to do that to a degree, but Bedfordshire were also keeping a tight rein on the run rate at the same time.
The Staffs duo had advanced the score to 77 before Walker (19) danced down the track to Worcestershire’s Kashif Ali and was stumped by Theo Robinson.
‘Battling effort’
That was the scalp Bedfordshire would have craved, given Walker’s destructive abilities, but Hawkins did his level best to propel Staffordshire to a competitive total.
After Hurt had been run out for six, Hawkins fell for 41 when he became Ali’s second victim, having hit one four and two sixes.
Sam Atkinson chipped in with 10 late on, but the wickets kept on falling and Anson wrapped up the innings – and his five-for – by bowling Jake Garlick.
Staffordshire needed the bowling and fielding performance of their lives if they were to defend their low-looking total.
It was a dream start for them, though, as they reduced Bedfordshire to 10-3 to renew hopes of victory.
Robinson’s attempted pull off Hurt saw him top-edge a return to the bowler, before Tarling was snaffled down the leg side by keeper Lincoln off the same bowler.
And when Jamal Richards flayed at a Garlick delivery and edged to Lincoln, Bedfordshire were in all sorts of bother.
‘Duo combine’
However, Dunk and Moughal then put the brakes on Staffordshire’s charge with their match-winning partnership.
They put on 119 for the fourth wicket to lead their side to the brink of victory before they were parted.
Kettleborough ran through his plentiful bowling options as the stand developed, but nothing worked for Staffs until Hurt (3-19) returned to claimed his third wicket.
He presented Garlick with a catch after hitting eight fours in his crucial knock.
But his work had been done and Bedfordshire’s easily victory was completed by Dunk and Ali with plenty of time to spare.
Dunk walked off having hit six fours and two sixes in his 51-ball knock, with Ali joining him for the final chapter.
It was a hugely disappointing way for Staffordshire to end their T20 Cup campaign.
They had showed their capabilities in thrashing Lincolnshire in the Super 12s stage of the competition.
But on the big occasion, they were outplayed by a Bedfordshire side who have shrugged off their red-ball struggles to make a white-ball impact.
