Former Derbyshire batsman to make Staffordshire debut in ‘Showcase’ fixture

Staffordshire will hand a debut to former Derbyshire player Nils Priestley in their ‘Showcase’ game against Leicestershire at Knypersley on Sunday (11am).

The 21-year-old, who went to Abbotsholme School, was released by Derbyshire at the end of last season after playing four List A matches.

However, the left-handed batsman and left-arm spinner has been in fine form for club side Swarkestone in the Derbyshire County League, scoring 444 league runs so far this summer.

And he is well known to Staffs’ management after scoring 140 off just 90 balls for a Derbyshire XI against Staffordshire’s Development side last week.

Staffs’ Twenty20 Cup captain Zen Malik also returns after spending a period out of the side while featuring on trial for first-class counties as he bids to make a return to the pro game.

The return to the white-ball format means Alex Mellor takes over the captaincy of the Staffordshire side – and he is joined in the side by Leek team-mate Rory Haydon.
