Jake Garlick says the hard work has only just started after he signed a short-term deal with Warwickshire.
The Staffordshire seamer has been rewarded for some impressive performances on the National Counties Cricket Association circuit – and for the Bears’ second team – with a contract covering the upcoming Metro Bank 50-over competition.
The 21-year-old is a shining example to all young cricketers. He was previously on the Warwickshire academy before injury problems hampered his progress.
However, he’s taken that disappointment in his stride to battle back and secure professional terms at Edgbaston.
But the Moddershall paceman isn’t resting on his laurels – he’s hoping this will be the springboard for him to earn a longer-term deal in the future.
‘Opportunity knocks’
“At the start of the year, I was bowling well but not quite sure where I was at,” he said.
“I had the opportunity to play for Staffordshire and also for Warwickshire seconds and they’ve been great platforms.
“It’s been in the back of mind since I was about 17 (being a professional cricketer) and I thought it was a realistic goal.

“I’ve now been given a chance. It’s only a month, but I can now show Warwickshire what I’m really about.
“It’s an achievement to get to this stage, but I know I now have to go out and perform.
“I just want to keep improving day by day and if I do well, something more permanent may happen.”
‘High praise’
Garlick has been working with highly-regarded Warwickshire bowling coach Graeme ‘Pop’ Welch during his time with the Bears’ second team.
But the young fast bowler, who progressed through the Staffs pathway system, isn’t going to forget the influence of Staffordshire head coach Chris Milward.
“I did really know a lot about ‘Pop’ beforehand. I’ve had some sessions with him and he’s keen and passionate about bowlers,” explained Garlick.
“It’s been really good, but I don’t want to take anything away from Milly (Chris Milward) either.
“I have a lot to thank him for in terms of helping me to develop my white and red-ball skills.
“This just shows how much NCCA cricket is valued by first-class counties. I’ve had my opportunity with Staffordshire, pushed on in the winter and now this chance has come.
“It just shows that anything is possible if you believe and work hard enough.”
‘Debut looming’
Garlick could make his List A debut for Warwickshire on Tuesday when they start their 50-over campaign at Northamptonshire.
He says when the day does arrive to make his bow, it will be a special one as he honours the memory of dad Jeff who passed away last year.
“When I told my mum about the contract she was buzzing,” added Garlick.

“If I make my debut, it will be for my dad. That will be a special day, but also an emotional one.”
Garlick’s rise is the latest success story for Staffordshire Cricket.
In recent years, Zen Malik, Rory Haydon and Joe Hawkins have all progressed to the first-class arena.
Ian Westwood, Warwickshire’s head coach, told the club’s website: “Jake is a player we’ve known for several years through our partnership with Staffordshire Cricket.
“He’s worked hard, continued to develop his game and has earned this opportunity. The Metro Bank One Day Cup is an excellent platform for young players to showcase their abilities, and we’re looking forward to seeing what Jake can bring to the squad.”
‘County pride’
Staffordshire captain James Kettleborough says the county wish Garlick well as he looks to earn a longer professional deal.
“I’m incredibly pleased for Jake. He’s worked so hard moving through the Staffordshire pathway,” said Kettleborough.
“He’s made huge strides forward. We’re fortunate that we have a group of whole-hearted cricketers and Garlo always gives 100 per cent.
‘We’ve had to have tough conversations, but that shows our depth’
“He’s always eager to deliver and even on the days when things aren’t going his way, he still wants the ball and will run in for you.
“In a way, it’s slightly bitter-sweet. In the past few years we’ve seen Zen, Rory and Joe move on to the pro game.
“We’d love Jake in our side, of course, but from a Staffordshire point of view we know our role in the game.
“And we’re delighted we’ve played a part in helping Garlo to get to this stage.”
